Recertification FAQs

Q: Do TCD (trans-cranial Doppler) courses count as continuing education for CNIM recertification?
A: If you received your credential before 2006-yes. After 2006 all CE must be directly related to the credential. General medical education will not be accepted.
Q: As a teacher/private educator, do the courses I teach qualify for continuing education credits toward recertification?
A: END educators working for programs (college based or private) are not allowed to count their time teaching toward recertification, as it is considered their job and not a continuing education activity.
Q: Can I receive continuing education credit for being an examiner at oral exams?
A: As of April 2007, examiners attending a full day of ABRET exams will receive 3 CEUs, and those who attend ½ day will receive 2 CEUs-not to exceed a total of 5 CEUs for the weekend.
Q: When must my continuing education documentation be turned in?
A: All recertifications must be postmarked by December 31 of the year the credential expires. Anyone not recertifying by the 31st will have their certification deemed inactive. In order to reactivate their credential, they will need to retake the written exam.
Q: If I decide to retake the exam and do not pass, can I just send documentation of continuing education instead, as long as it is prior to the expiration date of my credential?
A: No, technologists who opt to retake the written exam rather than turning in the continuing education hours, and fail the exam, will not be able to fall back on continuing education hours to maintain their credential.
Q: If I forgot to recertify before my credential expired, can I keep my same number when I retake & pass the exam?
A: Technologists who recertify by December 31st will retain their credential number and those whose credential has lapsed and later recertify will be issued a new number
Q: What type of continuing education is acceptable for credential renewal?
A: ACE credits from ASET are acceptable, but other types of continuing education are also acceptable, as long as they are related to the credential. ABRET will be auditing recertification documentation. Therefore you are urged to maintain documentation of your attendance and course content of the programs you list on your ABRET CE form.
Q: Is ABRET already aware of the ACE credits I have earned?
A: ASET does not submit the ACE credit information directly to ABRET. You will need to request a transcript from ASET to submit for your recertification, or write the ACE programs on the ABRET CEform. Feel free to attach the ACE transcript to the form rather than copying the information.
Q: How can I get continuing education when my employer does not support these efforts?
A: It is not ABRET’s desire that you spend significant resources to earn your continuing education. It is ABRET’s goal that you continue to learn and keep current in your field. There are many options and ABRET will accept documented continuing education that is related to the credential, whether it is a professionally sponsored program or an organized in-house effort. Continued growth and learning are the anticipated results which will benefit you, your patients and your employer.
